Older Driver Assessment

 

In New South Wales, drivers aged 75 and over need to undergo medical assessments to keep their unrestricted licenses. From age 85, they also require a practical driving test every two years to maintain an unrestricted licenseDrivers over 85 can also choose to modify their license instead of taking the test. 
Details:
  • 75 and over:
    Annual medical assessment from a doctor is required. 
85 and over:
Annual medical assessment and a practical driving test every two years are required for an unrestricted license. 
Modified License:
Drivers over 85 can opt for a modified license with restrictions, avoiding the bi-annual driving test.
Medical Assessment:
If a doctor recommends it, a medical assessment may be required earlier than the specified ages. 
Practical Driving Test:
If opting for an unrestricted license after 85, the driving test is conducted by a Service NSW testing officer or an accredited older driver assessor. 
Testing Options:
Drivers can choose to take the test at a Service NSW center or with an accredited assessor who can come to their home. 
Fees:
Fees apply for assessments with an accredited assessor. 
Serious Fail:
A "Serious Fail" in a driving test with an accredited assessor can lead to immediate license cancellation.
