Older Driver Assessment
In New South Wales, drivers aged 75 and over need to undergo medical assessments to keep their unrestricted licenses.
From age 85, they also require a practical driving test every two years to maintain an unrestricted license
.
Drivers over 85 can also choose to modify their license instead of taking the test.
Details:
75 and over:
Annual medical assessment from a doctor is required.
85 and over:
Annual medical assessment and a practical driving test every two years are required for an unrestricted license.
Modified License:
Drivers over 85 can opt for a modified license with restrictions, avoiding the bi-annual driving test.
Medical Assessment:
If a doctor recommends it, a medical assessment may be required earlier than the specified ages.
Practical Driving Test:
If opting for an unrestricted license after 85, the driving test is conducted by a
Service NSW testing officer
or an
accredited older driver assessor
.
Testing Options:
Drivers can choose to take the test at a Service NSW center or with an accredited assessor who can come to their home.
Fees:
Fees apply for assessments with an accredited assessor.
Serious Fail:
A "Serious Fail" in a driving test with an accredited assessor can lead to immediate license cancellation.
